Welcome to my e-portfolio. My name is Evelyn Flores and I am currently a graduate student at Manhattanville College waiting to graduate, on May 20, 2010, with a Masters Degree in Childhood Education. As part of the Dual-Degree Honors Program at Manhattanville College, I received my Bachelors Degree in Psychology on May 2009. During my undergraduate education, this passion of teaching made it easy for me to decide the course of my education. I doubled major in Psychology and Education because I believe it is essential for educators to have a sense of knowledge on Child Development. It is absolutely imperative for teachers to have a level of understanding on how children grow, develop, but most importantly learn.
Education has always played an important role in my life. Being brought up in a household where Spanish was the first language, was difficult for me and my parents. As a student, I was in bilingual and ESL classes; however, I had excellent teachers who always motivated me to be the best I could be. My parents were also a great support and although they did not speak English, they always managed to be involved in my Education. My parents always taught me to value education and as an educator it is my duty to serve as a role model and provide equal opportunities for all students, whether native English speakers or non-native English speakers, to learn. With this being said, I pursue on getting my Bi-lingual extension.
I am a firm believer that teaching is a rewarding job. The simple fact of observing students progress and contributing to their learning is rewarding in itself. Being passionate about teaching also involves teachers taking the time to discover and explore teaching strategies and participate in professional development workshops. A teacher must always be willing to learn new things and incorporate new teaching methods into their every day teaching.
Throughout my education, most of my time in the classroom has been for observation purposes, teaching lessons for a graduate class, or student teaching. During this time, I developed organizational, leadership and communication skills, all of which are essential in the teaching field. As a result of these experiences, I have been able to face new challenges and successfully handle any situation both in and outside a classroom setting. Given my experience and competency, I am confident in my ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, staff, administrators, parents and most importantly students; in addition to delivering every lesson to the best of my ability.
